A love for sewing that developed into a business based at home.

My passion with sewing began at school where I had an amazing teacher. Ever since I have made clothes, curtains and cushions for myself. Following many years in publishing, I began to think about a change of career to fit in with family life. My husband suggested making curtains and blinds for other people. However I didn't feel I was quite at that standard. So I researched some courses and found one in Four Marks with the amazing Penny Waight. She topped up my sewing knowledge by teaching me how to make pinch pleat curtains, pelmets and roman blinds among other things to a professional standard.  After the course I felt much more confident to go into a client's house and start measuring up!

I began with a friend's mother then other friends and then friends of friends, until most of my work was through recommendations and word of mouth. Gradually a range of fabrics was built up that were good quality, good value and with suppliers I knew were reliable and where possible based in the UK. It seemed a logical next step to also supply poles, tracks and other trimmings to give the customer the complete look. Then I also started making drum shaped lampshades, cushions and window seats. Fortunately I have a workroom at home so I don't have any extra premises overheads.

Now I am more than happy working away in my workroom listening to Radio 4 with a cup of Lady Grey tea! A couple of times a year I attend trade fairs where I get to see new fabric collections and trends. It is also a fantastic opportunity to catch up with other curtains makers and swap tips.  My enthusiasm for fabrics and soft furnishings is as great as ever and now I can't imagine doing anything else!
